Understanding Property Ownership – Part 1 (England and Wales)
Part 1 of a two-part series on property ownership, explores how property is owned or ‘held.’ We examine the intriguing history of where the word ‘tenure’ comes from, deriving, predominantly, from the Romans. One major influencer in the story of property ownership is the Law of Property Act 1925 (LoPa), which transformed and simplified how we hold land. We look at the two legal estates in land created by the LoPa, and the occupier leases which we all have some familiarity with – Leasehold and Freehold.
Stay poised for Part 2 where we will look at one more recent form of ownership, as well as legal interests in land and how they may affect tenants.
